The plot takes place over several years, allowing for growth and change of the characters and for patient plotters to see their seeds grow into fruition. It's not as sprawlingly detailed as the George R R Martin books, but the world is crafted well enough to be complex enough for political action on multiple fronts. So it was a treat to read a low-magic Fantasy book with an emphasis on political intrigue, multiple characters with believable and opposing agendas, and surprises and deaths of major characters.Īt some points it seemed like this was a sort of Game of Thrones ripoff there is even a major character that is a dwarf, wise in the way of politics, but I'm ok with that. The Game of Thrones books have largely ruined Fantasy novels for me - most others I've read get compared to them and fall short. ![]()
